A powerful explosion near the airport in Karachi, Pakistan's largest city, resulted in the deaths of two Chinese nationals, as confirmed by Beijing's embassy on Monday. The blast occurred around 11:00 PM local time on Sunday, with reports indicating that the explosion was heard from a distance.
According to the regional government of Sindh province, the incident took place on the airport motorway, where a "tanker" exploded. The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), a separatist militant group, claimed responsibility for the attack, stating in a message that it had targeted a convoy of Chinese engineers and investors returning from Karachi’s airport.

In its statement, Beijing's embassy in Pakistan labeled the incident a "terror attack," noting that, in addition to the two fatalities, one other Chinese national and several Pakistani citizens were injured during the blast. The embassy called on Pakistani authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the attack and ensure that those responsible are held accountable. Furthermore, it urged the implementation of practical measures to guarantee the safety of Chinese citizens, institutions, and projects operating in the region.
The BLA has a history of targeting Chinese nationals, arguing that ethnic Baloch locals are not benefiting from the wealth generated by foreign investments, particularly in resource-rich Balochistan province, which is Pakistan's largest but also its poorest region. The group seeks greater autonomy and has consistently attacked projects linked to Chinese investment, citing grievances over local economic marginalization.
Despite the explosion, Pakistan's Civil Aviation Authority stated that flights from Karachi were proceeding "as usual." They confirmed that various agencies were actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the explosion and its causes.
The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges faced by foreign nationals in Pakistan, particularly in areas where separatist groups operate. The Pakistani government has been working to improve security for foreign investors, especially in light of the increasing Chinese investments in infrastructure and energy projects across the country.
