NEW DELHI: Dublin Airport disclosed that approximately 12 individuals sustained injuries while aboard a Qatar Airways flight en route from Doha to Ireland. The incident transpired during a turbulent spell, although the aircraft managed to land safely and punctually, the airport confirmed on Sunday.
Flight QR017, operated by a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, touched down shortly before 1 p.m. local time in Dublin, as per airport records. Emergency services, comprising Airport Police and the Fire and Rescue department, were promptly deployed upon the aircraft's arrival. This measure was necessitated by reports of injuries from six passengers and six crew members, totaling 12 individuals, who had experienced turbulence over Turkey while airborne.

The occurrence comes on the heels of another turbulence-related incident merely five days prior, involving a Singapore Airlines flight traveling from London to Singapore. In that instance, the turbulence was of such severity that it resulted in the tragic demise of a 73-year-old British man. Additionally, 20 other passengers required intensive care due to injuries sustained during the turbulent episode, prompting an emergency landing in Bangkok.
Turbulence-related incidents pose a significant challenge to aviation safety, as highlighted by a 2021 study conducted by the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). The study revealed turbulence to be the most prevalent cause of airline accidents, accounting for over one-third of reported incidents between 2009 and 2018. While most of these incidents resulted in one or more serious injuries, there were no reports of damage to the aircraft itself.
The recent turbulence-related incidents underscore the importance of ongoing efforts to enhance aviation safety measures and mitigate the risks associated with adverse weather conditions encountered during flight. As aviation authorities continue to investigate such occurrences, ensuring passenger safety remains a top priority for airlines and regulatory bodies worldwide.
