Truth vs. Myth: Family and Neighbors Weigh in on Kolkata Horror Accused

Photo : Reuters

Kolkata: Sanjoy Roy, a 33-year-old civic volunteer, remains the sole individual arrested in connection with the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The body of the victim, found partially clothed on August 10, has led to intense media scrutiny and public outrage.

Arrest and Allegations

The arrest of Roy, who had been seen frequently at the state-run hospital, has been surrounded by controversy. Roy admitted to the crime, according to police reports, and was charged with both rape and murder. The case has been complicated by a swirl of rumors and partial truths that have emerged on social media. Reports about Roy's background vary widely: some describe him as having been married multiple times, others claim he had a penchant for pornography and visiting prostitutes.

Despite his role as a civic volunteer, Roy was noted for his influence, reportedly riding a bike adorned with a Kolkata Police sticker and frequently staying at police barracks. Allegations also suggest that Roy took bribes from patients' relatives for hospital services.

Reactions from Roy's Family and Neighbors

Mother's Perspective: Sanjoy Roy’s mother, Malati Roy, resides in a modest home in Bhabanipur, Kolkata. She maintains that her son was framed and asserts that those responsible for the framing should be held accountable. "He did nothing wrong," she told NDTV, expressing her belief in her son's innocence and her confidence that justice will be served.

Sister's Viewpoint: Roy’s eldest sister, who has been estranged from the family for 17 years, expressed shock at the allegations. She confirmed that Roy had been married twice but was unaware of his recent actions. While she finds it difficult to reconcile with the accusations, she insists that if Roy is guilty, he should face legal consequences.

Wife's Family: Roy's late wife, Shanti, who passed away in August 2023 from cancer, was pregnant at the time of her death. Shanti’s mother, Durga Devi, accused Roy of being abusive, stating that he had been known to drink heavily and beat his wife. Despite this, she acknowledged that Roy had been a part of their lives but had not visited since Shanti’s death. Devi said, "If found guilty, he should be punished, but we have nothing more to say."

Neighborhood Accounts: Local residents in Bhabanipur have described Roy as a problematic figure. Women in the area reported feeling uncomfortable around him, noting that he would often leer at them. Some sources claim that Roy was seen in a red-light district before the alleged crime and had a known addiction to pornography. These accounts add to the confusion surrounding Roy's character, highlighting the contrast between public perceptions and the ongoing investigation.

Ongoing Investigation

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is continuing its probe into the case, with efforts focused on uncovering the truth amid conflicting reports and public speculation. The investigation aims to distinguish fact from fiction and establish the full extent of Roy's involvement in the crime.

As the case progresses, the focus remains on achieving justice for the victim while addressing the numerous questions and concerns raised by the community and media.
