Tropical Storm Alberto, marking the first named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, unleashed heavy rains and coastal flooding across Texas and northeastern Mexico on Wednesday ahead of its anticipated landfall near Tampico, Mexico. The storm's impacts were forecasted to extend well beyond its immediate landfall location.
In Mexico, authorities closely monitored dam and river levels while clearing drainage points to mitigate potential flooding. Meanwhile, Texas officials issued warnings of flooded roads, particularly in the Houston area, and observed rising tides threatening coastal communities like Surfside Beach. To preemptively manage the storm's aftermath, Surfside Beach closed its beaches and urged residents and visitors to steer clear as flood conditions escalated.
The National Hurricane Center underscored Alberto's expansive reach, with tropical-force winds extending up to 415 miles from its Gulf of Mexico center. Despite its relatively modest sustained winds of 40 mph, the primary concern remained the projected rainfall of over a foot in parts of Texas and Mexico. Tropical storm warnings were issued for coastal regions on both sides of the border.

Governor Greg Abbott of Texas activated emergency management resources including high-water boats and helicopters with hoist capabilities as part of storm preparation efforts. By Wednesday afternoon, he had declared a severe-weather disaster declaration spanning 51 counties. Early impacts of the storm included reports of property damage on North Padre Island due to collapsed coastal bulkheads exacerbated by storm surges. Further south, officials in South Padre Island distributed free sandbags to bolster defenses against flooding.
As Alberto neared landfall, the National Weather Service issued tornado warnings for areas along the Texas-Mexico border, encompassing cities like McAllen and Mission. Earlier tornado warnings near Corpus Christi were also extended, accompanied by a broader tornado watch in effect until early morning across a significant portion of southern Texas, affecting approximately 2.5 million residents.
The unfolding situation prompted local communities and emergency responders to remain vigilant amid Alberto's unpredictable path and intensifying weather conditions.
