The Food Authority Requests Restaurants To Comply With Food Information Display Guidelines

Food safety remains a paramount concern throughout India, prompting the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to undertake various measures aimed at curbing food contamination and adulteration, both of which pose significant health risks. In a recent move, the food safety regulator has issued directives to food service establishments, urging them to comply with regulations pertaining to the display of information at their premises. According to a report by ANI, the mandate requires food outlets to prominently display the calorific value, allergens, and nutritional information for each food item they offer. This initiative comes in response to reports received by the authority regarding inconsistencies and misinterpretations in the display of information across different states.

The ANI report elaborates that FSSAI has clarified that food outlets have the flexibility to utilize various display options to convey the nutritional value of their offerings. The regulation stipulates that establishments with ten or more locations must indicate the calorific value alongside the food items featured on their menu cards, boards, or booklets.

Moreover, food outlets are also required to provide information on allergens and nutritional content, along with specifying whether each item is vegetarian or non-vegetarian, by incorporating appropriate logos on menu cards or boards.

FSSAI emphasizes the responsibility of e-commerce food aggregators to procure necessary information from restaurants and display it on their platforms, wherever applicable, ensuring transparency and compliance with food safety standards throughout the supply chain.

Through these measures, FSSAI aims to enhance consumer awareness and empower individuals to make informed choices about their dietary preferences, thereby promoting a culture of food safety and health consciousness across the nation.
