Teesta Dam Power Station Destroyed in Major Sikkim Landslide Incident

Guwahati: The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation's (NHPC) Teesta Stage 5 dam power station in Sikkim has been obliterated by a massive landslide that struck early Tuesday morning. This disaster follows the recent bursting of the Lhonak glacial lake, which was caused by a cloudburst in October 2023.

The landslide, which occurred on the hill adjacent to the 510 MW power station, was a culmination of several smaller slides over the preceding weeks. On Tuesday, a significant portion of the hill gave way, burying the power station under a large volume of debris. Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported as the station had been evacuated a few days earlier due to ongoing concerns about landslides.

Video footage from individuals working near the site captured the moment the cliff began to collapse. The dramatic scenes show a portion of the cliff shifting before a massive chunk fell onto the power station, causing significant damage and sending debris cascading down as onlookers can be heard shouting.

In addition to the landslide, the cloudburst that triggered the Lhonak glacial lake burst also led to severe flooding. This flash flood severely damaged the Teesta Dam at Chungthang, which is one of the largest hydropower projects in Sikkim. Videos from the area reveal large sections of the dam's wall missing, with the rising waters of the Teesta River flowing through the damaged structure unabated in Mangan district.

The events underscore the severe impact of recent weather events on Sikkim's infrastructure, highlighting the challenges faced in managing and maintaining such critical facilities in the face of extreme environmental conditions.
