Spirit Airlines Flight From Florida to Haiti Hit by Gunfire

Post by: Pratik Kumar

A Spirit Airlines flight traveling from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, was struck by gunfire on Monday, prompting a diversion to the Dominican Republic. Spirit Airlines confirmed that Flight 951 landed safely, but after an on-the-ground inspection, the aircraft showed damage consistent with gunfire. Fortunately, no passengers were injured, but a flight attendant sustained minor injuries.

As a result, Spirit Airlines has suspended its flights to Haiti for the time being as they assess the situation. The damaged aircraft was taken out of service, and Spirit arranged for passengers to return to Fort Lauderdale.

The incident occurred amidst ongoing gang violence in Port-au-Prince, where gangs control much of the city. As a result, the Port-au-Prince airport has grounded all commercial flights, further disrupting travel. Additionally, American Airlines has suspended its Miami to Port-au-Prince service until Thursday.

This incident also coincides with a period of political instability in Haiti. A transitional council, not recognized by the Haitian parliament, has moved to replace Prime Minister Garry Conille, nominating businessman Alix Didier Fils-Aime as his successor. Haiti has been without a functioning legislature since 2016, worsening the political and security crises.

This gunfire attack highlights the increasing volatility in Haiti as the country continues to face significant challenges.
