South Korea, China, Japan Leaders to Meet After 5 Years

Post by: Raman Preet

South Korea, China, and Japan are poised to hold their first trilateral summit in Seoul since 2019, according to an announcement from South Korea's presidential office on Thursday. The summit, scheduled for Monday, will bring together South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, Chinese Premier Li Qiang, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

The trilateral talks come after a prolonged hiatus in such engagements, with the last meeting occurring in December 2019 in China. Initially established in 2008, the annual trilateral summit aims to foster cooperation among the three Asian nations. However, issues such as historical disputes stemming from Japan's wartime aggression and strategic rivalries between China and the United States have often hindered progress in regional collaboration.

Prior to the trilateral summit, the leaders are set to engage in bilateral discussions on Sunday, as confirmed by the South Korean presidential office. The forthcoming talks hold significance for addressing regional challenges and exploring avenues for enhanced cooperation amidst evolving geopolitical dynamics in East Asia.
