Doris Bah Njueng, a 32-year-old Cameroonian residing in Ras Al Khaimah with her husband, experienced unsettling sensations in her chest and back, prompting her to seek medical attention. Following consultations with doctors, she received a devastating diagnosis on March 17: a tumour was discovered in her chest, leaving her stunned and shattered.
Despite the initial shock, Njueng found solace in the reassurance offered by the medical team at RAK Hospital, who presented the option of minimally invasive surgery to address her condition. Describing the tumour as being as large as a smartphone, Njueng faced the daunting reality of confronting a significant health challenge at such a young age.

On April 10, she underwent surgery at RAK Hospital to remove the tumour, marking the culmination of months of distress and discomfort. The hospital's multidisciplinary team, comprising specialists from various departments including general surgery, cardiac surgery, and anaesthesia, successfully performed minimally invasive thoracoscopic surgery to extract the tumour from her chest cavity.
Minimally invasive thoracic surgery, characterized by small incisions and minimal disruption to surrounding tissues, offered Njueng a less invasive approach to treatment, minimizing postoperative complications and facilitating a quicker recovery. Dr. Shalabh Mohan, a specialist general surgeon at RAK Hospital, highlighted the severity of Njueng's condition, emphasizing the critical threat posed by the tumour's compression of vital structures within her chest cavity.
Despite the challenges posed by the tumour, the surgery proceeded smoothly with minimal blood loss and no need for blood transfusions. Remarkably, Njueng did not require ventilator support following the procedure and was able to resume oral intake the day after surgery. After five days of observation, she was discharged from the hospital, with follow-up imaging confirming the successful removal of the tumour and full expansion of her right lung.
Reflecting on her journey, Njueng emphasized the importance of regular medical check-ups in detecting and addressing potential health complications early on. Grateful for the guidance and support of her medical team, she expressed profound appreciation for the care and reassurance provided throughout her ordeal.
Njueng's experience serves as a poignant reminder of the significance of timely medical intervention and the transformative impact of advanced surgical techniques in restoring health and well-being. Her story underscores the resilience and fortitude required to navigate unexpected health challenges, while also highlighting the crucial role played by healthcare professionals in delivering compassionate and effective care to patients in need.
