Sheikh Zayed Book Award 2024: 4,000+ Entries from 75 Nations Received

The 19th Sheikh Zayed Book Award (SZBA), run by the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre (ALC), got 4,052 entries from 75 countries. These entries came from 20 Arab countries and five new countries taking part for the first time. This award is one of the most important in the world for books and culture.

The team that read and checked the books finished their work in October 2024. The team is led by Dr. Ali bin Tamim, who is also the head of the SZBA and the ALC. They made sure all the books followed the rules. A list of chosen books will come out at the end of 2024.

The team includes important people: Saeed Hamdan Al Tunaiji from the ALC, Dr. Bilal Orfali from the American University of Beirut, and Dr. Mohammad Al Safrani from Taibah University in Saudi Arabia. Abdulrahman Al Naqbi, from the ALC, also joined the group.

Dr. Ali bin Tamim said, “The award grows every year. We see more books and more countries taking part. This award celebrates writers and publishers for their hard work. It is inspired by Sheikh Zayed, the founder of the UAE, who believed in culture and learning to make the country strong.”

Five new countries joined the award this year: Albania, Bolivia, Colombia, Trinidad and Tobago, and Mali. This shows the award is reaching more places. Egypt sent the most books, followed by Iraq, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Jordan, Syria, Tunisia, Lebanon, and the UAE. Outside the Arab world, the United States sent the most entries, followed by the UK, France, Spain, India, Germany, Italy, and Canada.

The award has many categories. The most popular category this year was Young Author, which got 1,034 entries. That is 26% of all entries. The Literature category got 1,001 entries, or 25%. Children’s Literature got 439 entries, making up 11%. This shows the award supports writers of all ages.

Other categories include Translation, Criticism, Arabic Manuscripts, Culture in Other Languages, Development, Publishing, and Cultural Personality of the Year.

The Sheikh Zayed Book Award remembers Sheikh Zayed, the founder of the UAE, for his work to grow the country. The award also shows that Abu Dhabi is a leader in culture, helping people connect, supporting the Arabic language, and improving the publishing industry.
