Dhaka: Sheikh Hasina’s son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, expressed gratitude to New Delhi on Sunday for "saving her life" after the ousted prime minister fled to India following a student-led uprising. In a critique of the interim government, Joy warned of potential chaos if elections are not held promptly.

Sheikh Hasina, 76, resigned as prime minister on Monday and departed to India by helicopter amidst escalating protests. Her resignation came after widespread accusations of human rights abuses during her 15-year tenure, including the extrajudicial killing of political opponents.

Following Hasina's resignation, the military intervened and agreed to student demands to appoint Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, 84, to lead a caretaker administration. Yunus's role is to address the current disorder and implement democratic reforms.

In an interview from Washington, Joy, 53, a former government adviser and US-based commentator, criticized the interim government as ineffective and consisting of "figureheads." He described the current situation in Bangladesh as "mob rule" due to the rapid removal of high-ranking officials such as the chief justice, central bank governor, and police chief, based on protesters’ demands.

Joy highlighted the urgent need for elections, warning that delays could lead to further chaos. “It’s in their best interest to hold elections... to return to a legitimate government with the authority of the people,” he said. Without a swift electoral process, he fears the situation could deteriorate further.

During the previous elections in January, Hasina's victory was marred by allegations of fraud and a crackdown on opposition members, resulting in numerous arrests. Since Hasina’s departure, her party, the Awami League, has faced attacks and has gone into hiding, with party offices being burned and reprisal violence against its members.

Joy emphasized the importance of the Awami League in Bangladesh’s political landscape, asserting that any democratic establishment must include the party to gain broad acceptance. He also noted that former opposition groups like the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) are reconstituting after years of suppression.

While Joy acknowledged that there were mistakes and excessive force used by police during the protests, he claimed that violence was not one-sided. He also suggested that unidentified foreign forces might have supported the protests, though he provided no evidence for this assertion.

As for Hasina’s future, Joy expressed appreciation for the protection provided by the Indian government but remained uncertain about her long-term plans. Hasina has been sheltered in a secret location in India and has not made any public statements since her arrival. Joy mentioned that there are no current plans for her to move to another country, and she hopes to return to Bangladesh eventually.
