Embark on a journey of joy and tradition at the Carnival of Las Palmas in Gran Canaria, an enchanting celebration that captivates both locals and global travelers. Running from January 26th to February 18th, 2024, this vibrant festival transforms Las Palmas de Gran Canaria into a kaleidoscope of cultural richness, music, and exuberant festivities.
Rooted in the 16th century, the Carnival has deep historical significance, with its origins traced back to a mask and costume ball in 1574. Over the centuries, it has evolved into one of the Canary Islands' oldest and most dynamic festivals, recognized as a Festival of International Tourist Interest. This annual extravaganza pays homage to the island's diverse heritage, offering a unique blend of history and contemporary celebration.
At the heart of the festivities lies Santa Catalina Park, an idyllic setting nestled between Las Canteras Beach and the Cruise Ship Pier. This picturesque location serves as the epicenter of the carnival, hosting a myriad of activities and performances. Drawing over half a million attendees each year, the park becomes a vibrant hub of cultural expression and communal revelry.
The dazzling parades and colorful costumes are the essence of the Las Palmas Carnival. The Carnival Queen Gala takes center stage, featuring participants adorned in elaborate costumes embellished with feathers and rhinestones. Streets come alive with costume parades, music and dance troupes, humorous murgas (singing groups of friends), and floats, creating a lively spectacle throughout the city. The grand carnival parade, spanning approximately seven kilometers from Castillo de La Luz to San Telmo Park, is a highlight, showcasing the city's grandeur and creative spirit.
The 2024 Carnival program promises a month-long extravaganza filled with festivities, dances, concerts, and shows. Key events include the Presentation of Candidates, Announcement Parade, Adults and Children’s Costumes, Murgas Stages, Comparsa Competition, Queen’s Gala, Dog Carnival, Integration Gala, the Big Carnival Parade, and the symbolic Entierro de la Sardina (Burial of the Sardine).
While Las Palmas takes center stage, the carnival spirit extends beyond with the Maspalomas Carnival from March 9 to 19, 2023. This additional celebration, including events at Holidayworld Maspalomas amusement park, adds to the island's festive atmosphere with karaoke, bars, Wooland amusement park, escape rooms, bowling, and international cuisine.
The Carnival in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria encapsulates the spirit of the Canary Islands—a harmonious blend of fun, music, and tradition. Whether a local or a global traveler, the carnival promises an unforgettable experience, brimming with joy, laughter, and cultural richness. The festival embraces inclusivity with events like the Fancy Dress Competition, Grand Dame Gala, Junior Carnival, Junior Gala, Daytime Carnival, Dog Carnival, Carnival in the Sun, Inclusive Gala, Chirimurga Night, Traditional Carnival, International Bodypainting Contest, Carnival Queen Gala, Gala Drag Queen, Drag Queen Preselection, Grand Parade, Nights of Carnival, and the symbolic Burial of the Sardine.
In essence, the Carnival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is a celebration of life, diversity, and creativity, inviting all to partake in its grandeur and revel in the magic that defines this extraordinary cultural extravaganza.
