After a tumultuous period, CEO Sam Altman is set to rejoin OpenAI's board in San Francisco. Following a boardroom dispute leading to Altman's firing and subsequent rehiring, an internal investigation found he was wrongly terminated. Altman will join new directors Sue Desmond-Hellmann, Nicole Seligman, and Fidji Simo.
The November 2023 board shakeup also included Ex-Salesforce co-CEO Bret Taylor and former US Treasury Secretary Larry Summers. Quora CEO Adam D'Angelo is the sole holdover from the previous board that initially fired Altman.
The chaotic events prompted an internal investigation by law firm WilmerHale, reviewing over 30,000 documents and conducting numerous interviews. The probe unanimously concluded that Altman and President Greg Brockman are the right leaders for OpenAI, according to board chair Bret Taylor.
Altman, a key figure in the AI explosion, faced an unexplained dismissal, triggering employee backlash. Microsoft, with significant OpenAI investments, offered to hire departing employees, leading to Altman's reinstatement.
However, the board members behind Altman's brief ouster left their roles. Despite legal challenges, OpenAI remains a pioneer in generative AI, competing with Google, Meta, and startups like Anthropic and Mistral. A legal battle with Elon Musk alleges OpenAI's deviation from its original nonprofit status, now acting as a Microsoft subsidiary.
Microsoft's involvement has elevated OpenAI's market status, but legal troubles persist. The New York Times is suing OpenAI for allegedly using its articles without permission to train models like ChatGPT. The Times claims ChatGPT could become a substitute for journalism, accusing OpenAI of scraping content without payment or authorization. OpenAI finds itself at the intersection of legal disputes, market competition, and the evolving landscape of generative AI technology.
