Renowned Urdu Poet Munawwar Rana Passes Away at 71

Renowned Urdu poet Munawwar Rana passed away at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences in Lucknow on Sunday. He was 71 and had been battling throat cancer for several months. Rana's daughter Sumaiya Rana confirmed his death, stating that he was hospitalised for 14 to 15 days due to illness. Initially admitted to Medanta in Lucknow, he later moved to SGPGI, where he breathed his last around 11 pm on Sunday. Munawwar Rana is survived by his wife, four daughters, and a son.

Munawwar Rana, born on November 26, 1952, in Uttar Pradesh's Raebareli, made significant contributions to Urdu literature, especially in the realm of ghazals. His poem 'Maa' is considered one of his most famous works and has a distinguished place in Urdu literature. He received several awards throughout his career, including the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2014 for his poem 'Shahdaba.' However, he returned the award, citing 'intolerance' in the country.

The poet's demise occurred due to a cardiac arrest. The news of Munawwar Rana's death was met with sorrow, as he was a renowned figure in Urdu poetry, admired globally for his ability to capture the essence of life through his work. The funeral was scheduled for Monday, where he would be laid to rest.
