Rape Suspect Escapes Police During Crime Scene Visit, Dies in Pond

Nagaon, Assam: Tafujal Islam, a key suspect in the rape case involving a 14-year-old girl, died early this morning after escaping from police custody. The incident occurred during a crime scene re-creation near Dhing in Assam's Nagaon district.

According to the police, Islam was being transported to the location of the alleged crime around 4 a.m. when he managed to slip away from the officers. The suspect reportedly pulled away from a constable's grip and fled towards a nearby pond. Despite a swift search operation by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Islam's body was recovered from the pond after about two hours.

A senior police official described the situation, saying, “After his interrogation, he was taken for crime scene re-creation. When he was there, he suddenly tried to escape by pulling the handcuff from a constable’s grip and fell into a nearby pond.” The constable involved in the incident sustained injuries during the escape attempt.

The police are investigating how Islam was able to escape and have indicated that further action will be taken to ensure such incidents do not recur. Islam was also supposed to lead the police to another suspect’s residence.

Islam had been arrested on Friday in connection with a horrifying case where a 14-year-old girl was allegedly raped by three individuals in Nagaon on Thursday evening. The victim was found in a semi-conscious state near a pond with her bicycle beside her, following the assault which occurred while she was returning from a coaching class. She was rescued by local residents after being left on the roadside for approximately an hour.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma condemned the incident as a “crime against humanity” and promised stringent action. In a post on X, he assured that the perpetrators would be brought to justice and instructed the Assam Police chief to expedite action against those responsible.

The girl is currently recovering in the hospital, with medical tests pending to confirm the sexual assault. In response to the case, local shops, markets, and educational institutions were closed as a mark of protest, and additional security was deployed to maintain order.

This incident comes amidst ongoing protests against sexual violence, following the recent rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor in Kolkata.
