Paris Protests Erupt After Le Pen's Conviction and Ban

On Sunday evening, the streets of Paris were filled with large protests. People from both sides of politics – the far right and the left – came out in big numbers.
The far-right, led by Marine Le Pen, held a rally at Place Vauban. At the same time, some left-wing groups, including members of the France Unbowed (LFI) party, gathered at Place de la République for a counter-protest.

The far-right protest came just days after Marine Le Pen, 56, was found guilty of misusing money from the European Parliament. She was given a four-year prison sentence. Two years of the sentence will be served under house arrest, and two years are suspended. The court also banned her from holding any public office for five years. This means she cannot run for political positions, including the next presidential election. However, she plans to appeal the decision next year.

During the rally, Le Pen said the court's decision was not fair. She called it a “political decision” meant to stop her from being a candidate in future elections.

On the other side of the city, thousands of people who support left-wing ideas protested as well. They were worried about the rise of far-right views in the country. These protesters held signs and shouted messages asking for equality, fairness, and a society where different voices are heard and respected.
Both rallies showed how divided politics in France has become, especially after the court ruling against Marine Le Pen.
