OpenAI Partners with Condé Nast for Content Deal with New Yorker and Vogue

OpenAI, led by Sam Altman, has recently entered into a significant multi-year partnership with Condé Nast. Announced on Tuesday, this collaboration will integrate content from Condé Nast’s prominent brands, such as Vogue and The New Yorker, into OpenAI’s products, including the ChatGPT and the newly introduced SearchGPT prototype. The financial specifics of this deal have not been disclosed.

This latest agreement follows a series of similar partnerships that OpenAI has secured with major media organizations over the past few months. The company has signed deals with Time magazine, the Financial Times, Business Insider’s parent company Axel Springer, France’s Le Monde, and Spain’s Prisa Media.

These content partnerships are crucial for training OpenAI’s artificial intelligence models, which are designed to enhance the capabilities of its products. However, the move has not been without controversy. Media organizations like the New York Times and the Intercept have previously filed lawsuits against OpenAI, citing copyright concerns related to the use of their content in training AI models.

Brad Lightcap, OpenAI’s Chief Operating Officer, emphasized the company's commitment to collaborating with Condé Nast and other news publishers to uphold the accuracy, integrity, and quality of journalism. “As AI increasingly influences news discovery and distribution, we aim to ensure that it respects and supports high-quality reporting,” Lightcap stated.

The broader media landscape has been under significant pressure in recent years, particularly as tech giants have diminished publishers’ revenue streams. Roger Lynch, CEO of Condé Nast, acknowledged these challenges in a memo to staff, noting that the partnership with OpenAI is a step toward recovering some of the lost revenue.

OpenAI’s SearchGPT, launched in July, marks the company’s foray into the search engine market, traditionally dominated by Google. The AI-powered search engine offers real-time access to online information and is being developed with input from its media partners to refine its design and functionality.

The collaboration with Condé Nast and other news organizations is part of OpenAI’s broader effort to integrate quality content into its AI systems, ensuring that users benefit from accurate and reliable information.
