Mexico confirms first human bird flu case in 3-year-old girl

Post by: Bandan Preet

A 3-year-old girl from Durango, a state in western Mexico, has been confirmed as the country's first human case of bird flu, according to health officials.

The virus, known as Type A H5N1 influenza, has been spreading mainly among animals in different countries. In the United States, there have been around 70 cases in the past year, as reported by the World Health Organization. However, experts believe the actual number might be higher.

In Mexico, the young girl is being treated at a hospital in Torreon, located in the nearby state of Coahuila. She is in serious condition. According to the health ministry, doctors started her treatment using medicine meant to fight the flu.

So far, it is not clear how the girl got infected with the virus. Health workers and investigators are looking into the situation and have started testing wild birds living near the girl’s home to find out more.

Even though this is a serious case, the health ministry said that the risk to most people remains low. They are keeping a close watch and taking steps to stop the virus from spreading.

This case has raised concern, but experts are working hard to learn more and protect the public.
