London: Maggie Smith, the esteemed British actress known for her remarkable contributions to theatre and film, has died at the age of 89. Celebrated for her Shakespearian performances and acclaimed roles, Smith garnered widespread recognition as Professor McGonagall in the beloved "Harry Potter" film series and as the sharp-witted Dowager Countess in the award-winning television series and film adaptations of "Downton Abbey."
One of the few performers to achieve the remarkable trifecta of winning two Academy Awards, four Emmy Awards, and a Tony Award, Smith's illustrious career began on stage in the 1950s. Her exceptional talent captivated audiences and critics alike, establishing her as a formidable presence in the entertainment industry.
Smith's first nomination for an Academy Award came in 1965 for her portrayal of Desdemona opposite Laurence Olivier in "Othello." She won her first Oscar in 1969 for her unforgettable performance as an Edinburgh schoolmistress in "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie." Her second Oscar followed in 1978 for her supporting role in the comedy "California Suite," a performance that prompted co-star Michael Caine to famously declare, "Maggie didn't just steal the film; she committed grand larceny."
