Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) spinner Digvesh Singh Rathi has been fined 25% of his match fees for breaking the Indian Premier League (IPL) rules during a match against Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Tuesday, April 1. The match took place at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. Along with the fine, he also received one demerit point. Digvesh admitted to his mistake under Article 2.5 of the IPL’s rules and accepted the punishment given by the match referee.
The action was taken because of how he celebrated after taking the wicket of Punjab opener Priyansh Arya. During the second innings, Digvesh bowled a fast delivery that Arya tried to hit down the ground. However, he got a top edge, and the ball went up in the air. LSG’s Shardul Thakur, who was fielding at mid-on, ran forward and caught the ball. Arya was dismissed for 8 runs from 9 balls.

After getting the wicket, Digvesh walked up to Arya and made a gesture as if he was ticking off a name from a list. Arya didn’t react and walked back to the pavilion. However, many fans on social media did not like Digvesh’s celebration and criticized him for his actions.
Despite the controversy, Digvesh continued to bowl well and took another wicket, dismissing Prabhsimran Singh, who was playing brilliantly. Prabhsimran scored 69 runs from just 34 balls before Digvesh got him out. The LSG spinner finished his spell with 2 wickets for 30 runs in 4 overs. However, his efforts were not enough to help his team win, as Punjab Kings comfortably chased the target and won the match by 8 wickets.
Punjab was chasing a target of 172 runs. They lost their first wicket early, with just 26 runs on the board in 2.5 overs. But after Priyansh Arya’s dismissal, Punjab captain Shreyas Iyer and Prabhsimran Singh built a strong 84-run partnership in just 44 balls. Prabhsimran was the top scorer, hitting 9 fours and 3 sixes in his quickfire 69 off 34 balls.
After Prabhsimran got out, Iyer got support from Nehal Wadhera, who scored 43 runs off 25 balls. Together, they put up another 67-run partnership in just 37 balls. Thanks to their strong batting, Punjab easily chased the target in just 16.2 overs and won the game by 8 wickets.
