Lawrence Butler Signs 7-Year, $65.5 Million Deal with A's

Outfielder Lawrence Butler has agreed to a big seven-year contract worth $65.5 million with the Oakland Athletics, according to a source who knows about the deal. This contract includes a team option for the year 2032 and will be final once Butler passes a physical exam. The source spoke to The Associated Press but asked to stay anonymous because the deal isn’t officially finished yet.

Butler, who is 24 years old, was picked by the A’s in the sixth round of the 2018 draft. By the start of the 2024 season, he had only 53 days of experience in Major League Baseball. In 2023, Butler struggled at the beginning of the season with a .179 batting average and seven RBIs in his first 41 games. Because of this, he was sent down to play in Triple-A Las Vegas. But when he was brought back to the major league team in June, he did much better, finishing the season with a .262 batting average, 22 home runs, and 18 stolen bases.

Last year, Butler earned $627,000 on a contract that paid him the minimum salary of $740,000 when he played in the major leagues and $121,826 when he was in the minors. If his contract had stayed the same, Butler would have been able to ask for a higher salary through salary arbitration after the 2026 season, and he would have been able to become a free agent after the 2029 season.

The Athletics, known for having one of the lowest payrolls in baseball, have started spending more money for the 2025 season. This is because the team will play three seasons in a smaller minor league stadium in West Sacramento’s Sutter Health Park. Besides Butler, the A’s also signed Brent Rooker, a designated hitter and outfielder, to a five-year, $60 million deal, and Luis Severino, a right-handed pitcher, to a three-year, $67 million contract.

For the first time since the new rules were set in 2022, the Athletics will receive 100% of the revenue-sharing money they are owed. This means the team now has to prove they are following the rules if there is ever a problem with how the revenue is shared.

On the same day, the A’s also announced Marc Badain as their new team president. This is an important change for the team as they get ready for the future.

The Athletics will give more details about the contract and other changes at a news conference in Las Vegas on Friday. The team also plans to start building their new stadium in the spring of 2025.
