The players were very excited, and their celebration was loud and fun. You could hear their cheers through the walls of the locker room. The celebration got even wetter when Coach JJ Redick came out, soaking wet with his hair still dripping. He wore a green Philadelphia Eagles sweatshirt, joking that it was "the only dry thing I have." He also said, "Hopefully, in the next nine days, the $17,000 damage to the carpet can get fixed," after his players poured ice buckets over him.
Redick and the team earned this fun moment. The Lakers, led by new coach Redick and star player LeBron James, have gone through some tough times. They made a big trade during the season and faced other challenges. But now, they are ready for a deep playoff run and maybe even a chance at winning the NBA championship.
Austin Reaves, one of the players, said, "I feel like we can win a championship because I know everyone in the locker room believes that." Even though LeBron James didn’t talk to the media after the game, Luka Dončić agreed with Reaves. Dončić, who joined the Lakers from the Dallas Mavericks earlier this season, scored 39 points in three quarters against the Rockets. He said, "I think we have the team to do it. When everyone is focused, we are hard to beat."
Their dream of winning a championship is looking more possible. Dončić only played his first game for the Lakers on February 10, after the Lakers made a big trade to get him. The team has won 19 games and lost 12 since then, which is a good record given all the changes they’ve been through.
Coach Redick is proud of the team for sticking together, saying, "The guys who’ve been here from the start have been through many highs and lows. I’m proud of them. Winning 50 games in the regular season is an achievement, especially in a tough Western Conference."
The Lakers now have two of the best scorers in the NBA: LeBron James, the all-time top scorer, and Luka Dončić. They scored 53 points together in 53 minutes in their game against the Rockets. The Lakers also finished with a 31-10 record at home, which is one of the best in the league.
With the third seed secured, the Lakers can rest their top players in their last regular-season game on Sunday in Portland. This will give them a break before the playoffs start next week. In the last two seasons, the Lakers had to play through the play-in games after finishing seventh in the Western Conference.
Now, the Lakers are getting ready for the playoffs and their first-round matchup, which will be decided after Sunday’s game. Reaves shared his thoughts, saying, "It feels like this year has been five years, but also like it just started." He added, "Every time we faced problems, we bounced back, and that’s all you can ask from a team."
The Lakers are focused on winning the NBA championship. With their strong players and great teamwork, they believe they can achieve this goal and add another title to their collection.
