Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case: CBI Submits Status Report Amid Supreme Court Hearing
New Delhi:The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has presented its status report to the Supreme Court regarding the probe into the rape and murder of a 31-year-old woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. This tragic case has led to nationwide protests and a strike by doctors demanding better safety measures.
On August 22, 2024, the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, resumed hearings on the case. Chief Justice Chandrachud emphasized that the nation cannot afford to wait for another tragic event to prompt necessary changes. As a result, a National Task Force has been established to ensure the safety of medical professionals.

During the hearing, the Chief Justice noted discrepancies in the recorded times of events related to the case. The General Diary (GD) entry from 10:10 AM referred to the discovery of the victim, with preliminary reports suggesting strangulation and potential sexual assault. Justice Pardiwala, questioning the procedural irregularities, expressed his surprise at the case's handling, particularly the timing of the Unnatural Death (UD) registration and the post-mortem examination.
Justice Pardiwala found it alarming that the post-mortem had occurred before the UD case was registered, which deviated from standard procedures. He questioned the delay in documenting the death and the role of the Assistant Superintendent Non-Medical in the investigation.
Solicitor General (SG) revealed that senior doctors and the victim’s colleagues had requested videography of the incident, indicating possible attempts at cover-up. The SG also criticized the fact that the FIR was registered after the victim’s cremation and claimed that the crime scene had been altered.
Chief Justice Chandrachud sought the medical report on the accused's injuries and highlighted issues with the registration of the FIR. The Supreme Court was informed that doctors at RG Kar Hospital continue to feel threatened, and the Chief Justice assured that no adverse actions would be taken against doctors who resumed their duties.
The Court also urged various doctor associations to submit names for the National Task Force and discussed the inclusion of resident doctors in the committee. The Supreme Court emphasized the importance of resuming public health services and ensuring the safety of healthcare professionals.
Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, was questioned at the CBI office for the seventh consecutive day. The Supreme Court's ongoing scrutiny reflects the seriousness of the situation and the urgent need for reforms to protect medical staff.
