Dubai: India has officially invited the UAE’s media and entertainment industry to take part in the first-ever World Audio-Visual Entertainment Summit (WAVES Summit). This global event aims to bring together professionals from different sectors of the entertainment industry to collaborate and share ideas.

The summit will be held in Mumbai in May and will feature key players from the film, television, animation, gaming, OTT (Over-The-Top streaming), and broadcasting industries. The goal is to discuss the latest trends, challenges, and innovations that are shaping the future of media and entertainment.

The WAVES Summit is more than just an event; it is a movement,” said a senior Indian official during his recent visit to the UAE to promote the summit.

Sanjay Jaju, Secretary of the Indian Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, explained that the summit is designed to promote global learning and partnerships through storytelling and innovation. He emphasized that the discussions at the event would help shape the future of media and entertainment.

“This summit will also provide an opportunity to encourage cultural exchanges, build business partnerships, and explore the impact of new platforms like OTT on the entertainment industry,” he added.

Strengthening Media Ties Between India and UAE

India and the UAE share a strong relationship in the media and entertainment industry. Jaju pointed out that Bollywood and regional Indian films are hugely popular in the UAE, especially among the large Indian community living there. The UAE is home to over four million Indians and Indian cinema enjoys a massive following among both Indian and non-Indian audiences, including Emiratis.

To further strengthen these media ties, Indian officials have been in discussions with the UAE Media Council. They have invited UAE media representatives to join the Global Media Dialogue at the summit. The Indian delegation has also reached out to UAE-based media and entertainment companies, encouraging them to participate in the event.

Jaju noted that India and the UAE have worked together on multiple media projects. “These partnerships help both nations expand their influence in global markets. India brings a rich cultural heritage, while the UAE has a strategic location that makes it a key media hub for the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region,” he explained.

He also highlighted that the UAE has become an important destination for international film productions. Many Indian films have been shot in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, making the UAE a crucial part of India’s entertainment industry.

Incentives for UAE Filmmakers

India is actively working to attract international filmmakers, including those from the UAE. To encourage foreign production, India offers various incentives such as tax rebates, subsidies, and access to diverse shooting locations and top-quality production facilities.

Jaju emphasized that India is eager to collaborate with UAE-based filmmakers. “We want to make India an appealing destination for UAE filmmakers. Our country has a rich history of cinema, and we are opening doors for more global partnerships,” he said.

As part of the WAVES Summit, India has also launched 22 international competitions, inviting participation from filmmakers, animators, musicians, and content creators from around the world, including the UAE. These competitions will focus on different areas such as filmmaking, trailer production, animation, gaming, music composition, AI-driven storytelling, and other innovative media solutions.

“We welcome creative talent from the UAE to join these competitions. This is a great opportunity to showcase their work on an international stage,” Jaju said.

Cultural Collaboration Between India and UAE

India and the UAE have a well-established cultural relationship, particularly in the field of cinema. Jaju highlighted that both countries have worked together to organize film festivals such as the Indo-Dubai International Film Festival (IDIFF) in India and the Indian Film Festival in the UAE. These events have played a key role in promoting Indian cinema among global audiences.

He also mentioned that Indian films do more than just entertain – they influence culture, fashion, and language, helping to strengthen the bond between the people of India and the UAE.

Beyond film festivals, both nations are exploring new ways to collaborate in media infrastructure and content production. UAE-based media companies are increasingly partnering with Indian studios for film co-productions, digital content creation, and distribution deals.

“This is just the beginning of a much larger collaboration,” Jaju said. “We expect strong participation from the UAE at the WAVES Summit, which will open doors to new opportunities and help shape the future of global media.”

Plans are also being made for more joint cultural projects, allowing filmmakers, actors, and media professionals from both nations to work together and share their expertise.

Details on how to register for the summit, as well as deadlines for competitions, are available on the official WAVES India website and its social media platforms.
