Mumbai — BJP MP and actress Kangana Ranaut has turned to the police for assistance after receiving death threats linked to her upcoming film, Emergency. The threats emerged following the release of the film's trailer on social media, sparking controversy and concerns for her safety.
Kangana Ranaut stars as former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in *Emergency*, which has drawn criticism from certain groups. A video surfaced on social media showing a group of men threatening the actress over the film’s release. The video, which depicts six men sitting in a room, includes two dressed as Nihang Sikhs. One of the men in the video threatens that the film will face condemnation from the Sikh community, warning, “Your movie will be received with chappals,” referring to shoes being thrown as a form of protest.

Another man, identified as Vicky Thomas Singh, a social media influencer known for his support of Khalistani separatist Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, issues a direct threat. Singh warns that if Bhindranwale is depicted as a terrorist in the film, similar consequences to Indira Gandhi’s assassination could follow. Singh mentions the 1984 assassination of Gandhi by her bodyguards, Satwant Singh and Beant Singh, saying, “We will offer our heads to but those who can offer heads can also chop off them off.”
In response to these threats, Ranaut posted the video on X (formerly Twitter) and tagged the Director General of Police of Maharashtra, as well as the police forces of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab, urging them to investigate the threats and provide protection. She wrote, “Please look into this.”
The release of Emergency has ignited further controversy as several organizations, including the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), have demanded a ban on the film. They argue that the film propagates an "anti-Sikh" narrative and inaccurately represents Sikhs as "separatists."
The trailer of Emergency portrays the early political life of Indira Gandhi, her relationship with her father, Jawaharlal Nehru, and how she navigated through political challenges and crises during her tenure. Despite the film’s focus on historical events, the depiction has provoked strong reactions from some groups who feel it misrepresents their history and community.
The situation underscores the ongoing tension surrounding the portrayal of sensitive historical figures and events in media, and the potential for such portrayals to incite backlash and threats of violence.
