Japan Launching Digital Nomad Visa Next Month

Post by: Dr. Amrinder Pal Singh

In a strategic move to boost its economy and global competitiveness, Japan is set to launch a digital nomad visa next month, welcoming citizens from 49 nations, including EU member states, for an extended stay of up to six months. With an ever-growing number of over two million foreign workers, the highest recorded, as reported by Japan's labor ministry, the country aims to harness the talents of highly skilled professionals, especially in the IT sector.

Eligible countries range from EU nations to Australia, the US, South Korea, Singapore, and more. The digital nomad visa targets individuals with an annual income of at least 10 million Japanese Yen (€62,672) and mandates private health insurance. This visa is designed for 'designated activities,' such as remote work for foreign companies or freelancing for international clients. Notably, it accommodates YouTubers generating revenue from overseas advertisers.

While the visa allows a six-month stay, it differs from the current 90-day allowance for visa-free 'short-term visitors,' who are not permitted to work during their stay. Renewal is possible six months after departing the country, though consecutive stays are not feasible. Accompanying family members, including children and spouses, are allowed during the stay, provided they also have private medical insurance.

However, it's important to note that this visa does not grant residency, and long-term accommodation rental is not permitted. The proposed visa is currently open for public comment, with expectations for an official launch by the end of March
