Italian football icon Luigi "Gigi" Riva, the all-time leading goalscorer for Italy's national team, passed away at 79, as confirmed by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) on Monday. Riva, known as "Rombo di Tuono" (thunder-clap) for his powerful presence and shooting, scored 35 goals in 42 national team appearances. A key figure in Italy's 1968 European Championship triumph, he also played in the 1970 World Cup, where Italy was runners-up to Brazil.
FIGC president Gabriele Gravina expressed deep sorrow, calling Riva "a true national monument." A minute's silence in his honor will precede all Italian championship matches this weekend, as per the FIGC statement.
Riva, a prominent face of Italian soccer alongside Gianni Rivera, was a Ballon d'Or runner-up in 1969. Spending most of his club career with Cagliari, he was Serie A's top scorer during the team's historic 1970 league title win. Injuries marked his later playing years, leading to his retirement in 1976 with 164 league goals in 315 matches for Cagliari, where he served as honorary president.
Post-retirement, Riva contributed to the national team's backroom staff, including Italy's 2006 World Cup victory.
