Indian National Sentenced to 35 Years for Child Exploitation in the US

Post by: Raman Preet

A 31-year-old Indian national has been sentenced to 35 years in federal prison for sexually exploiting several children through a social media app. He posed as a teenage boy to gain their trust and later blackmailed them with explicit images when they refused his demands.

Sai Kumar Kurremula, who was living in Edmond, Oklahoma on an immigrant visa, was sentenced to 420 months in prison for the sexual exploitation of three children and the transportation of child pornography, according to US Attorney Robert Troester.

At his sentencing hearing, US District Judge Charles Goodwin sentenced Kurremula to 420 months in federal prison, followed by a lifetime of supervised release.

The judge stated that these crimes are considered some of the most serious because they involve young and vulnerable victims. He further emphasized that Kurremula caused lasting trauma to his victims and their families, and the severe punishment reflects that impact.

In April 2024, Kurremula was charged with sexual exploitation of children and transporting child pornography. According to an affidavit filed in support of the criminal complaint, the FBI began investigating in October 2023 after discovering a suspicious account on a social media app that was being used to sexually exploit minors.

The FBI traced the IP address used to create the account, which led them to Kurremula. Public documents and evidence presented during the hearing showed that he had exploited at least 19 minors through the messaging app. He frequently posed as a 13 to 15-year-old boy to gain the trust of his victims. When the minors refused his requests, he used manipulation, threats, and blackmail to force them into sending more explicit content.

Kurremula pleaded guilty and admitted to sexually exploiting three minors and knowingly transporting child pornography. He also confessed to making threats to make the victims comply:

He told one minor that he would show her parents explicit images of her.

He warned another victim that he would come to her home and shoot her family.

He threatened a third victim that he would publicly share explicit images and videos of her.

US Attorney Robert Troester condemned the crimes, saying that Kurremula’s 35-year sentence serves as a clear warning to others who attempt to exploit children.

FBI Special Agent Doug Goodwater also criticized Kurremula, stating that he manipulated children for his own gratification.

“These horrific actions stole the innocence of his victims and caused unimaginable harm,” Goodwater said.
