India Launches Rocket for Space Docking Mission

India has successfully launched a rocket carrying two small spacecraft to test docking in space. This is an important step for the country’s ambitions to build a space station and send astronauts to the Moon.
The mission, known as SpaDeX (Space Docking Experiment), is very important for India’s space plans. Jitendra Singh, India’s Minister of Science and Technology, called the mission “vital for India’s future space ambitions.” The launch was broadcast live by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), and Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced last year that India plans to send a man to the Moon by 2040.

The PSLV-C60 rocket was launched on Monday evening from the Sriharikota launch site. The rocket carried two 220-kilogram satellites into space. ISRO successfully launched the rocket and its 24 payloads, including the two spacecraft for the docking experiment.

The mission's goal is to develop and demonstrate the technology needed for rendezvous, docking, and undocking two small spacecraft in space. This technology is important for India’s future Moon mission and will also be crucial for human spaceflight and satellite servicing missions in the future.

To achieve this, the spacecraft will travel at speeds of 28,800 kilometres per hour while orbiting Earth. When they approach each other, their relative speed will be reduced to just 0.036 kilometres per hour, so they can merge into a single unit in space. This technology is a major step forward for India, and ISRO believes it will make India the fourth country in the world to have space docking technology, joining Russia, the United States, and China.

In 2023, India became the fourth country to land an unmanned spacecraft on the Moon, following Russia, the United States, and China. ISRO’s progress in space exploration continues to impress the world.

Looking ahead, ISRO is preparing for the launch of the NVS-02 satellite in January 2025. This satellite will be launched aboard the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV). ISRO Chairman S. Somanath mentioned that this is just one of many missions planned for the upcoming year.

In May 2023, the GSLV-F12 rocket successfully launched the NVS-01 satellite. The NVS-01 satellite was designed to improve the NavIC system, which is India’s navigation satellite system. The NVS-02 mission will continue this work, with advanced features to make the system even stronger.
This news shows how India is advancing in space technology and preparing for more ambitious missions in the future.
