Pete Hegseth has been chosen to be the new U.S. Secretary of Defense. The vote to confirm him was very close, with a 50-50 tie. Vice President JD Vance had to step in and vote to break the tie. This was a big win for President Donald Trump, but many Democrats and some Republicans did not want Hegseth in the job.

Hegseth is a host and a military veteran. He promises to make big changes to the U.S. military, but not everyone is happy about it. Some senators are worried about his ideas, especially his views on women in the military.
Three Republican senators—Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins, and Mitch McConnell—voted against Hegseth. They joined all the Democrats in saying no. McConnell said Hegseth had not shown that he could handle a job as big as running the military. Hegseth has only led groups of about 100 people, but the U.S. military has over 1 million soldiers.
Senator Jack Reed, a Democrat, said he would watch Hegseth closely to make sure he did his job well. Hegseth will now lead 1.3 million soldiers and almost 1 million other workers in the military.
There were also some problems with Hegseth’s past. His ex-sister-in-law said he hurt his second wife, but Hegseth denied this. There were also stories that he drank too much and made mistakes with money in veteran groups. Hegseth promised not to drink alcohol if he became Secretary of Defense.
Hegseth has also spoken against programs that focus on diversity in the military, which worried some people. Still, he got support from military veterans like Senator Joni Ernst, who helped him win approval from the committee that votes on nominations.
Most Republicans in the Senate supported Hegseth. They said he was the right person to lead the military. This vote was unusual because most past defense secretaries have had much more support from both parties.
Now that Hegseth has been confirmed, he will be in charge of the U.S. military. He will have to deal with big issues, such as problems with China, Syria, Iraq, and Ukraine. But no one is sure what Hegseth thinks about these issues.
This vote was only the second time in U.S. history that a cabinet nominee needed a tie-breaker vote. The first time was in 2017 when Betsy DeVos became Secretary of Education. Hegseth’s confirmation shows how divided politics are in the country today.
