Washington: On Sunday, protests erupted in over 130 cities across 25 countries, driven by demands for justice following the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. The demonstrations began with smaller gatherings in Japan, Australia, Taiwan, and Singapore before expanding to several European cities, including Stockholm, where women congregated in Sergels Torg square.
The protests are a reaction to the August 9 killing of the 31-year-old postgraduate student of chest medicine, who was attacked while on duty at RG Kar Medical College. The case has sparked global outrage, leading to large-scale demonstrations in the US, where 60 protests were planned.
The arrest of a suspect and the former principal of the medical college have not quelled the public's demand for justice. In Stockholm, protesters, many dressed in black, sang Bengali songs and held signs demanding accountability and enhanced safety for women.

Dipti Jain, one of the protest organizers and a British citizen who studied at Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital, expressed the collective shock and horror at the crime. She previously led a protest in the UK for female doctors in response to similar issues.
The Supreme Court of India is scheduled to hear the case on Monday. Despite tougher laws enacted after the 2012 gang rape and murder of a student in New Delhi, activists argue that the Kolkata case underscores the ongoing issue of sexual violence against women.
The widespread protests highlight the global call for justice and safety, reflecting deep-seated concerns about violence against women and the need for systemic change.
