Coco Gauff, ranked third in the tournament, played against Maria Sakkari from Greece. Gauff won the match 7-6(1), 6-2. This victory was important for her because she lost to Sakkari in the semi-final last year. Gauff played well, but she struggled in the last game. She made six double faults before finally winning with a strong forehand shot. After the match, she said she was happy with how she played, except for the last game. Gauff’s next match will be against Belinda Bencic from Switzerland.
Madison Keys, who won the Australian Open, had a tough match against Elise Mertens from Belgium. Keys won 6-2, 6-7(8), 6-4. It was not easy for her because she had to save 12 out of 15 break points. She also hit five aces. This win was special because she had lost to Mertens in their last two matches. This time, she stayed strong and won. In the next round, she will play against the winner of the match between Emma Navarro from the USA and Donna Vekic from Croatia.
Taylor Fritz, who won the Indian Wells tournament in 2022, had a difficult start against Alejandro Tabilo from Chile. Fritz lost the first set but then played better and won 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. He will now play against Jack Draper from Britain. Draper won against American Jenson Brooksby in straight sets.
Ben Shelton played an exciting match against Karen Khachanov from Russia. Shelton won 6-3, 7-5. The young American played with great energy and strong shots. He had a problem with blisters on his hand, which made it painful to play. In the second set, he was losing, but he fought back and won the last four games. He ended the match with a big ace and cheered loudly. His next match will be against Brandon Nakashima, another American player.
Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus, who is the world’s number one female player, easily defeated Lucia Bronzetti from Italy. Sabalenka won 6-1, 6-2. She had lost early in her last two tournaments, but this time, she played with confidence. The windy weather was difficult, but she stayed focused and finished the match quickly. She will now play against Sonay Kartal from Britain.
Later in the evening, Canadian player Denis Shapovalov will play against Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz, who has won four Grand Slam titles. In the women’s matches, Jasmine Paolini from Italy will face Jaqueline Cristian from Romania. As the tournament continues, fans are excited to see more great tennis matches.
