A French woman, Sandrine Pissarra, has been sentenced to life in prison for starving her daughter, Amandine, to death. The court in Montpellier, a city in southern France, found Pissarra guilty of torturing her 13-year-old daughter, who died in August 2020 after suffering years of abuse.
Amandine passed away from a heart attack at just 28 kilograms (62 pounds) and 1.55 meters (5 feet 1 inch) tall. Her body showed severe weight loss, muscle damage, and signs of infection. She also lost several teeth and had her hair pulled out. Amandine had been locked in a small, windowless storage room for weeks and denied food. The abuse began when she was young and included being beaten with brooms, kicked, insulted, and shouted at.
The court heard that Amandine had suffered extreme physical and emotional pain at the hands of her mother, who was described as a "domestic tyrant" and "executioner." Prosecutor Jean-Marie Beney called the sentence appropriate, saying it was the only just response to the cruelty Amandine endured.

Pissarra’s ex-partner, Jean-Michel Cros, 49, was also sentenced. He received 20 years in prison for failing to provide care for Amandine, despite being aware of her condition. His sentence has no possibility of parole and is more severe than the 18 years prosecutors had originally requested. Cros could have faced up to 30 years in prison.
Before the verdict, Pissarra expressed regret, saying, "I want to apologize to my children, that's all." Cros, however, had no words to say. When Amandine died, Pissarra claimed that her daughter had eating disorders, a claim that no one else confirmed. She also said that on the day Amandine died, the girl had eaten only a small amount of food before vomiting and then stopped breathing.
The medical report confirmed that Amandine’s suffering was caused by a combination of neglect, abuse, and extreme malnutrition. The court heard that from an early age, Amandine had been mistreated by her mother, who had punished her harshly and locked her away. According to a psychiatric evaluation, Pissarra was filled with hatred and transferred it onto Amandine.
Pissarra has eight children from different relationships, and she ran a nail salon before her arrest. She has been in custody since May 2021, awaiting trial.
The case has raised questions about responsibility, with Pissarra’s defense team suggesting that others who had contact with Amandine, like neighbors, teachers, and doctors, should also share some blame for not noticing the signs of abuse. However, the prosecutor maintained that the abuse was primarily Pissarra’s fault.
