First LEED Platinum for Communities Awarded to Aldar's 'Athlon' Project

Aldar Properties’ active living residential project in Dubai, Athlon, has been awarded the first LEED platinum certification in the UAE for community planning and design.

This achievement places Athlon at the forefront of sustainable real estate in the United Arab Emirates, highlighting sustainability as a priority for the new community.

The US Green Building Council’s LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification is a stringent, data-driven rating system aimed at achieving resilient construction and sustainable development worldwide.

Faisal Falaknaz, Group Chief Financial and Sustainability Officer, stated, “To promote sustainable behavior, the community is designed with energy and water-saving fixtures, smart waste disposal systems, electric vehicle charging points, and a network of shaded walkways and bicycle routes to encourage sustainable transportation. It will be built using low-carbon and locally sourced materials, aligning with the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 ambition and supporting Aldar’s Net Zero goals.”

Athlon will feature designated areas for sports and fitness, as well as activities that connect residents with parks and green spaces within a half-mile of each villa. These features aim to promote wellbeing and inspire a healthy living environment.

Additionally, Athlon has earned a 2-star rating from Fitwel for Communities, the premier certification program in the world focused on promoting universal health.
