First American Turkey Shipment Departs for Indian Market

The first shipment of American turkey products destined for India left the United States on Tuesday, signaling a major advancement in the trade relations between the two countries. This milestone comes more than a year after India agreed to reduce high tariffs on U.S. turkey products, following an American request to open up the Indian market.

The agreement to lower tariffs, which was a crucial element in this shipment, is the result of continued efforts to expand bilateral trade. U.S. Senator Mark Warner of Virginia, who co-chairs the Senate India Caucus, hailed the shipment as a historic step forward for international trade, particularly for U.S. turkey producers seeking to diversify their global market reach.

“This shipment represents a significant opportunity for Virginia’s poultry producers and a major step forward in U.S.-India trade relations,” Senator Warner stated. “As co-chair of the Senate India Caucus, I look forward to the continued cooperation between our two countries and the opening of new opportunities for Virginia’s poultry industry.”

The shipment is a direct result of an ongoing trade agreement between the U.S. and India, which has seen a reduction in tariffs that previously made U.S. turkey products prohibitively expensive for the Indian market. This progress began ahead of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the U.S. in 2023 when Senator Warner, along with his colleagues, urged U.S. Trade Ambassador Katherine Tai to negotiate better market access for American turkey and poultry producers.

Leslee Oden, CEO of the National Turkey Federation, expressed excitement about the opportunity. “Our U.S. turkey producers are dedicated to offering safe, nutritious, and versatile protein to the global market,” Oden said. “We are thrilled that Indian consumers will now have the chance to enjoy the high-quality American turkey that so many others around the world already appreciate.”

This shipment represents not only a win for U.S. producers but also for India’s growing consumer market. The trade deal that made this possible was finalized in September 2023, which saw India eliminate or reduce retaliatory tariffs on U.S. turkey products. This move opens the door to a growing demand for protein in India, a country where the middle class is rapidly expanding, and consumer preferences are diversifying.

John King, president of Virginia Poultry Growers Cooperative, noted the impact on local producers. “We’re excited to be part of this new market opportunity,” King said. “Nearly 200 independent turkey grower owners will benefit from expanded exports, and we look forward to seeing this relationship flourish.”

Hobey Bauhan, president of the Virginia Poultry Federation, echoed those sentiments, expressing optimism for future returns. “Virginia turkey farmers are proud to offer high-quality, lean protein to the Indian market,” Bauhan said. “We are grateful for the efforts that have made this opportunity possible.”

This shipment is not just a reflection of U.S. success in penetrating new markets, but also a testament to the growing strength of U.S.-India relations. It demonstrates both countries’ shared commitment to increasing food diversity and improving the quality of available products. The agreement that made this possible is expected to be a model for future trade negotiations, helping to build even more robust economic partnerships in the coming years.
