Kolkata – The family of a Kolkata doctor who was brutally raped and murdered last month has accused the police of attempting to suppress the case. The tragic incident, which occurred during the doctor’s night shift, has sparked widespread protests across West Bengal, demanding urgent and decisive action.
The 31-year-old doctor’s parents joined a demonstration at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where their daughter’s body was discovered on August 9. They claimed that the police initially obstructed the investigation and tried to close the case prematurely.
According to the family, they were denied access to their daughter’s body and had to wait at the police station while it was taken for a post-mortem examination. When the body was eventually returned to them, a senior police official allegedly offered them money, which they immediately rejected. "When the body was handed over to us, a senior police official offered us money, which we immediately declined," the father said during the protest.

The family has actively participated in the protests to support junior doctors who are also demanding justice for their daughter. The Kolkata Police have faced intense criticism from both political figures and the public regarding their handling of the sensitive case. Concerns have been raised about how the accused, Sanjoy Roy, had unrestricted access to various areas of the state-run hospital at all times. Reports also suggest that Roy was involved in illegal activities, such as arranging hospital beds and other services for patients in exchange for money.
Protesters have been vocal on social media and in street marches, using slogans that remind police officers of their own families and daughters. The widespread discontent has prompted further legal action.
In response to the mounting outrage, the Calcutta High Court has ordered the case be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). On Monday, the CBI arrested Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, in connection with alleged financial misconduct related to the institution.
Additionally, the West Bengal Assembly recently passed a new anti-rape bill that stipulates capital punishment for those convicted of rape if their actions result in the victim’s death or leave her in a vegetative state. This legislative move reflects the heightened demand for justice and tougher measures against sexual violence in the region.
