Egypt's Minister of Education and Technical Education, Mohammad Abdel Latif, has announced a significant educational reform: starting next year, artificial intelligence (AI) and programming will be core subjects for first-year secondary school students. This initiative aims to equip students with essential programming skills that are increasingly vital in today's digital landscape.
The minister made this announcement during a symposium organized by the National Press Authority, where he discussed the latest developments in Egypt's educational system. He emphasized that Egypt boasts the largest pre-university education system in the Middle East and North Africa, which is bolstered by the dedication of 843,490 teachers and the operation of 550,000 classrooms across 29,698 public and private schools.
During the 2023/2024 academic year, the Egyptian education system has seen a remarkable enrollment of 25,494,232 students. Minister Abdel Latif highlighted the ministry's ongoing efforts to address classroom overcrowding, with ambitious plans to construct between 10,000 to 15,000 new classrooms each year. Innovative solutions such as mobile classrooms and a two-shift system are being implemented in some schools to accommodate the growing student population.

In recent years, the minister noted a significant reduction in class sizes, with the number of students per class now below 50, thanks to the creation of 98,744 additional classrooms. However, this expansion has also resulted in a pressing teacher shortage, estimated to range from 469,860 to over 665,000.
To tackle this challenge, the government plans to recruit 30,000 new teachers each year while also contracting 50,000 part-time teachers. Additionally, the ministry has extended the number of teaching weeks and class durations and is providing extra pay for additional classes.
In a bid to improve student attendance, the ministry is introducing an annual scoring system along with various extracurricular activities. These efforts have already yielded positive results, with attendance rates now exceeding 85 percent, reflecting a commitment to enhancing educational outcomes for students across Egypt.
