Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, reviewed the final phase of the Al Fahidi Fort rehabilitation project ahead of its public reopening in the first half of 2026.
The restoration project was launched by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai. The initiative aims to preserve Dubai’s heritage and ensure that Al Fahidi Fort — the emirate’s oldest surviving structure — remains a key cultural landmark for future generations.
Preserving Dubai’s Oldest Landmark
During her visit, Sheikha Latifa toured the historic Al Fahidi Fort and received a detailed briefing on the comprehensive restoration work. She also viewed the six main galleries and exhibition spaces that will form part of the new museum experience.
The galleries showcase artefacts, archival photographs, and historical documents, supported by advanced digital media, audiovisual presentations, and interactive 3D displays. These features will tell the story of the Fort from its construction in 1787 to modern-day Dubai.
Before becoming Dubai’s first museum in 1971, the Fort served multiple roles. For over two centuries, it functioned as a centre for governance, judicial and administrative affairs. It also housed successive rulers who led the emirate and laid the foundation for its development and prosperity.
A Symbol of Dubai’s Journey
Al Fahidi Fort is one of Dubai’s most important heritage sites and an essential part of the city’s collective memory. Over the years, it has witnessed Dubai’s transformation into a global city.
Sheikha Latifa highlighted the Fort’s importance, describing it as a reminder of Dubai’s beginnings and the vision that shaped its future. She noted that the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum believed strong foundations and clear purpose were key to lasting progress.
She also emphasized that preserving historic landmarks like Al Fahidi Fort strengthens Dubai’s cultural tourism sector. The restored museum will offer visitors a meaningful look into the emirate’s past, traditions, and daily life, while helping future generations stay connected to their roots.
Cultural Tourism and Future Vision
The rehabilitation project reflects Dubai Culture’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding historic sites as living spaces. The aim is not only to preserve history but also to present it in engaging and modern ways.
Once reopened in H1 2026, Al Fahidi Fort is expected to serve as a major cultural attraction, combining heritage preservation with innovative museum experiences — reinforcing Dubai’s position as a global centre for culture and creativity.
