Divers Open Hole in Sunken Superyacht, Have Only 10 Minutes to Search for Bodies

Divers have entered the sunken superyacht Bayesian in a desperate search for six missing individuals, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah. The yacht sank off the coast of Italy during a tornado, leaving one person confirmed dead and several others, including Morgan Stanley International Bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo, unaccounted for.

The search operation is facing severe obstacles. The 72-meter-long yacht, which remains largely intact on the seabed, is located at a depth of 50 meters, complicating access for rescue teams. According to Nick Sloane, who led the salvage operation for the Costa Concordia in 2013, the divers have entered a crucial 24-hour window for potentially rescuing survivors trapped in air pockets. However, time is running out.

Marco Tilotta, a diver from Vigili del Fuoco di Palermo overseeing the rescue, reported that teams have been diving continuously since late last night. Despite hopes of finding survivors, Tilotta acknowledged that conditions underwater are “prohibitive,” making the operation exceptionally challenging.

The superyacht is positioned on its right side on the seabed, with divers struggling to assess whether its mast has broken. Divers are employing meticulous techniques to search the wreckage, including opening a hole in the side of the vessel and removing a thick glass window for access. Emergency responder Luca Cari explained that divers can only spend about 10 minutes per dive due to the need to ascend and descend, adding to the difficulty of the search. The rescue team has already examined the command bridge but found no one there.

Experts speculate that the yacht’s rapid sinking might have been caused by open hatches and doors, which allowed water to flood the vessel quickly. Sailing expert Sam Jefferson suggested that the yacht was likely pinned down by the wind, exacerbating the situation.

Among the missing are Lynch, known for his high-profile fraud case, and his co-counsel Chris Morvillo. Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, was among the 15 people rescued. The situation remains dire as rescuers continue their efforts in the face of daunting challenges.
