Diane Warren extends Oscars losing streak after 16th Best Original Song nod

Diane Warren has once again missed out on an Oscar win, keeping her record as one of the most-nominated artists who has never won a competitive Academy Award.

The 68-year-old songwriter, who has been nominated 16 times over the past 37 years, lost yet again in the Best Original Song category. This year, she was nominated for "The Journey," a song performed by H.E.R. for the film The Six Triple Eight. However, the award went to "El Mal" from Emilia Pérez, written by Camille and Clément Ducol. During the acceptance speech, Camille mentioned that the song was created to "denounce corruption."

Even though Warren's losing streak now stands at 16, she is not the record holder for most Oscar nominations without a win. That title belongs to Greg P. Russell, a sound expert who has been nominated 17 times without a single victory.

In a recent interview, Warren spoke about her nomination for "The Journey," calling it the most deserving song she has ever written. She admitted that if she finally won, she might faint from excitement. "It would be amazing. Especially for this song. There are so many layers to it that make it special. Winning for this one would be even more meaningful," she said.

Despite never winning, Warren has made a huge impact on both movie soundtracks and pop music. She has written hit songs for major films, including Burlesque (Cher), Armageddon (Aerosmith's "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing"), Pearl Harbor (Faith Hill's "There You'll Be"), and The Hunting Ground (Lady Gaga's "Til It Happens to You"). Beyond film music, she has also written some of the most popular songs in pop history, including DeBarge's "Rhythm of the Night," Celine Dion's "Because You Loved Me," Toni Braxton's "Un-Break My Heart," and Cher's "If I Could Turn Back Time."

Although Warren has yet to win a competitive Oscar, the Academy did recognize her career achievements by awarding her an honorary Oscar in 2022. While she didn’t take home the trophy this year, her influence in the music industry remains as strong as ever.
