Cynthia Erivo jokes fans instantly sing Defying Gravity to her since Wicked

People have found a new way to greet Cynthia Erivo—by singing Defying Gravity! While talking on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on January 27, the actress shared that since Wicked was released, fans randomly start singing the famous song when they see her.

Jimmy Kimmel asked if people really walk up to her and start singing. Cynthia smiled and said, “Yes, they sometimes just go straight into it,” even when she doesn’t ask them to.

When Kimmel asked how she feels about it, Cynthia said she is still trying to understand. But she also said it feels nice because it shows how much people love Wicked and connect with its emotions.

Talking about funny moments with fans, she shared a story about a fan asking for a photo in a public bathroom. She joked, “It’s not a bad place—the lighting is usually quite nice!”

Cynthia played Elphaba in the 2024 movie version of Wicked, alongside Ariana Grande as Glinda. The film was a huge hit, making over $700 million worldwide. It was directed by Jon M. Chu and was released as the first part of the full Wicked story.

The second part, Wicked: For Good, will come out on November 21, 2025. When Kimmel asked if the actors knew the movie would be in two parts, Cynthia said they found out later.

Cynthia, who is nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars this year, explained that making two movies gave more space to include all the important scenes, songs, and details.
