The artwork is called Datecrete Bee Hotel. It is a sculpture made from a new material called datecrete, which is made from date seeds. Unlike normal concrete, datecrete does not use cement or resin. The sculpture is made to attract bees and help them interact with the piece. For three months, the bees' activity around the sculpture will be filmed. At the end, the artwork will include both the sculpture and the film showing how the bees react to it.
The Datecrete Bee Hotel was shown at Abu Dhabi Art and will also be displayed at other locations across Abu Dhabi until December 27, 2024.
The artists who created this piece are Sara Farha and Khaled Shalkha. Sara is an architect who focuses on building things that are good for the environment. Khaled is a chemical engineer who works on problems where culture, economy, and policy meet. They started Datecrete Studio, where they mix science and design. They were guided by Dr. Christianna Bonin, a professor at the American University of Sharjah.
Many important guests were at the unveiling, including His Excellency Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi); Her Excellency Huda Al-Khamis Kanoo, Founder of ADMAF; Emily Doherty, Director of The Christo and Jeanne-Claude Award; Maya Allison, Executive Director of NYUAD Art Gallery; and other guests, along with the winning artists.
Her Excellency Huda Ibrahim Al-Khamis Kanoo talked about how the Award has encouraged art and creativity in Abu Dhabi for over 12 years. She praised the winning project for supporting the Year of Sustainability 2023–2024. She also congratulated the artists for using date seeds to make a new material that is good for the environment.
Maya Allison, Executive Director of NYUAD Art Gallery, said Abu Dhabi is becoming an important place for public art. She explained that the Datecrete Bee Hotel is a great example of art that connects with nature, especially with bees and plants. It shows that all living things, including humans, are connected.
Emily Doherty, Director of The Christo and Jeanne-Claude Award, said that the Award has always supported art that deals with important issues like the environment and social problems. She praised the artists for creating a beautiful and useful piece of art that helps promote sustainability.
Since it started in 2013, The Christo and Jeanne-Claude Award has helped young artists in the UAE by giving them the chance to create and show their art. It helps students and recent graduates turn their creative ideas into real projects.
Datecrete Bee Hotel is a good example of how art and science can work together to solve problems. It shows how creative thinking can help protect the environment and promote sustainability.
