Bihar Dalit Girl Gang Rape-Murder: Prime Suspect Arrested Aides Still at Large

PATNA: Sanjay Rai, the prime suspect in the gang rape and murder of a 14-year-old Dalit girl, was arrested in Muzaffarpur district, Bihar, on Monday. Rai was apprehended following a raid at his suspected hideout, which was tracked through his mobile phone, according to police.

The arrest followed an extensive search after Rai had been on the run since an FIR was filed against him and his associates. Police received a tip-off about Rai's location, leading to the raid in the Saraiya police station area of Muzaffarpur on Sunday.

Muzaffarpur Senior Superintendent of Police Rakesh Kumar confirmed that Rai is being interrogated by a special team. He also noted that one of Rai's associates had been previously arrested. Rai was presented before the Chief Judicial Magistrate and remanded to judicial custody for 14 days. Reports suggest that two more of Rai's accomplices have been detained for questioning. Additionally, Rai's property has been seized and demolished following a court order.

The FIR, filed by the victim’s mother, alleged that Rai, a married man with three children, had proposed marriage to his teenage daughter and threatened the family when his proposal was rejected. The family had anticipated violence, which they reported occurred on August 11.

The victim's body was discovered the following day in a pond near her village, with injuries including cut marks on her neck, head, and arms. Although the postmortem report did not confirm rape, it indicated significant injuries.

Tensions escalated in the village after local residents, frustrated by the delay in Rai’s arrest, vandalized the homes of Rai's associates. This incident led to increased unrest between rival caste groups in the area.
