Sarah Rahanuma, a 32-year-old newsroom editor, was found dead in a lake in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Her body was discovered floating in Hatirjheel Lake, a prominent area in the capital. Local media reports confirm that the body was identified as Rahanuma, who worked as an editor at a notable media house.
The discovery was made by a local resident named Sagar, who noticed the body in the lake. Sagar promptly notified authorities, and Rahanuma was transported to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared her deceased. The circumstances surrounding her death are currently under investigation.
Sajeeb Wazed, the son of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, condemned Rahanuma's death as a severe attack on freedom of expression in Bangladesh. Wazed expressed his concerns in a post on X, highlighting that her death represents a broader issue of repression against journalists. His statement also mentioned the recent arrest of Golam Dastagir Gazi, underscoring the volatile environment for media professionals in the country.

The day before her death, Rahanuma posted a poignant message on Facebook, tagging a man named Fahim Faysal. The post, which appeared to be a farewell, expressed her regrets about not being able to fulfill future plans with Faysal and wished him well in his endeavors. The nature of her final post and her recent professional challenges are now under scrutiny as authorities investigate the circumstances of her death.
The incident has prompted calls for a thorough investigation and has drawn attention to the safety of journalists in Bangladesh, where freedom of expression and press freedoms have faced increasing challenges.
