Anthropic Eyes $2B Funding, Valuing AI Startup at $60B

The company Anthropic is about to get $2 billion in new funding, which will raise its value to $60 billion. This comes just a few months after it raised $4 billion from Amazon, making it a strong competitor to OpenAI, another big company.

The new funding is being led by a group called Lightspeed Venture Partners. If the deal happens, Anthropic will have a total of $6 billion in funding, which is a huge increase from its $18 billion value in the last round.

Amazon invested $8 billion in Anthropic last year as part of its plan to compete with other big companies. The $4 billion Amazon put in will turn into shares of the company during this funding round.

Alphabet, the company behind Google, also put in $2 billion in 2023. This shows that big companies are getting more interested in the kind of technology that runs services like ChatGPT.

Anthropic was started by two siblings, Dario and Daniela Amodei, who used to work at OpenAI. The company builds large models that need a lot of power and skilled workers. Anthropic made about $875 million last year from selling its models and working with companies like Amazon Web Services.

Anthropic’s quick growth shows how fast the tech world is changing. OpenAI, backed by Microsoft, started the boom with ChatGPT in 2022. Now, OpenAI is worth about $157 billion after raising $6.6 billion in 2024.

Money being invested into new companies is growing fast. Companies like Anthropic are getting almost half of all the funding for new businesses in the U.S. last year, according to PitchBook. This shows how strong the race is to lead the tech world.
