Abu Dhabi Biobank has started a new service to help parents store their newborn baby's cord blood. This service is private and costs less than other options. The Biobank is working with hospitals in Abu Dhabi, like Danat Al Emarat Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Corniche Hospital, and Kanad Hospital.

Cord blood is collected from the baby’s umbilical cord right after birth. It has special cells called stem cells. These cells can help treat many serious illnesses like blood diseases, cancer, and genetic problems. Doctors have used stem cells in over 60,000 treatments around the world.

Before, families had to send cord blood to other countries because storage was not available in the UAE. Now, Abu Dhabi Biobank will keep it safe in a high-tech facility in Masdar City. The blood will be stored for up to 30 years, and parents can use it if needed.

This service will help families find a stem cell match if their child or another family member gets sick. Brothers and sisters have a good chance of being a match. This makes treatment easier and increases the chance of getting better.

Paul Downey, the head of Abu Dhabi Biobank, said, “Many people do not use cord blood banking because it is too expensive. We want to change that. Our goal is to help families store their baby’s stem cells easily and at a lower cost. We also offer extra services like newborn screening and genetic advice.”

With this new service, families in the UAE can now keep their baby’s stem cells safe, giving them hope for better health in the future.
