OpenAI's chief technology officer, Mira Murati, announced on Wednesday that she is leaving the company behind ChatGPT, adding to the growing list of high-level departures. In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Murati reflected on her more than six years at the San Francisco-based company, calling the experience "an extraordinary privilege." She expressed that her decision to leave was difficult, but felt the timing was right.
"There’s never an ideal time to walk away from a place one cherishes, but the moment feels right," Murati said in her post. She also mentioned her desire "to create the time and space to do my own exploration."
Murati's departure comes shortly after OpenAI introduced a new series of advanced artificial intelligence models designed to spend more time thinking, aiming for chatbots that deliver more accurate and beneficial responses. This new model, nicknamed "Strawberry," was built to tackle more complex problems in areas such as science, coding, and mathematics—domains where previous models had been criticized for inconsistent performance.
What sets these new models apart is their ability to refine their thinking processes, attempt different approaches, and recognize mistakes before finalizing an answer. OpenAI's push to improve "thinking" in its models is aimed at addressing the ongoing issue of "hallucinations"—a phenomenon where AI chatbots generate persuasive but incorrect information. This problem has dampened the initial enthusiasm for ChatGPT-style AI features, particularly among business users.
OpenAI's release of the Strawberry model coincided with its ongoing fundraising efforts, which could see the company valued at around $150 billion, positioning it as one of the world’s most valuable private companies, according to reports from U.S. media.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman responded to Murati's announcement, thanking her for her contributions and assuring that details regarding a transition plan would follow soon.
Murati's departure is part of a broader trend of key figures leaving OpenAI. Co-founder Greg Brockman is currently on an extended leave of absence, and fellow co-founder John Schulman left to join a rival AI company, Anthropic. Additionally, a product team leader who had been recruited from Meta also recently left OpenAI. Earlier this year, another co-founder, Ilya Sutskever, exited the company following a boardroom dispute that temporarily resulted in Altman’s ouster from the organization.
