Zurich: Swiss police have arrested several individuals following the first use of a controversial capsule designed for assisted suicide. This futuristic-looking device, known as the "Sarco," was deployed in a wooded area of Merishausen, located in the northern canton of Schaffhausen, which borders Germany. Authorities confirmed this development on Tuesday.
The Schaffhausen police reported that they have opened criminal proceedings against multiple individuals for "inducing and aiding and abetting suicide." While several people have been detained, the police did not disclose further details regarding their identities or those of the deceased.
According to a spokesperson for The Last Resort, the organization responsible for the capsule, the deceased was a 64-year-old American woman who had been suffering from a severely compromised immune system. Among those detained is Florian Willet, the co-president of The Last Resort, along with a Dutch journalist and two Swiss nationals. Willet was the only other person present when the woman chose to end her life, as confirmed by the spokesperson.
In a statement released by The Last Resort, Willet described the woman's death as "peaceful, fast, and dignified." The organization also mentioned that the woman had successfully passed psychiatric evaluations prior to her decision.
A spokesperson for the Schaffhausen prosecutors refrained from providing additional details or confirming the number of detainees involved in the case.
The "Sarco" capsule, characterized by its sleek and aerodynamic design, operates by releasing nitrogen gas, which reduces the oxygen levels in the capsule to lethal levels, resulting in death. This capsule was developed by Philip Nitschke, an Australian physician known for his work on assisted suicide since the 1990s.
Switzerland has become a focal point for advocates of assisted suicide due to its legal framework, which permits such practices. The Last Resort claimed to have received legal advice that supported the deployment of the capsule. However, the capsule has sparked significant media interest and ongoing discussions among Swiss authorities regarding its use.
On Monday, Elisabeth Baume-Schneider, the Swiss health minister, stated that the capsule does not comply with product safety laws, indicating that its use of nitrogen gas is also legally questionable. This raises further ethical and legal concerns about the future of such devices in assisted suicide practices within Switzerland.
