Three people have died after a medical helicopter crashed into the sea near southwestern Japan on Sunday. This was reported by Kyodo News, quoting information from the coast guard.

The helicopter was carrying six people. An 86-year-old woman who was being transported as a patient was confirmed dead on the same day the crash happened. On Monday, the coast guard also confirmed the deaths of a 68-year-old man, who was a family member of the patient, and a 34-year-old doctor.

The helicopter took off from Tsushima Island in Nagasaki Prefecture at around 1:30 pm on Sunday. It was on its way to a hospital in Fukuoka, which is the biggest city on the island of Kyushu. It was expected to arrive there at 2:15 pm. However, something went wrong when the helicopter's tracking signal stopped moving around 1:43 pm.

At around 5:05 pm, a coast guard ship found the helicopter floating upside down in the water. They quickly rescued three people who were still alive and conscious. The other three people were also pulled out but were sadly confirmed dead later.

Local officials worked to keep the helicopter from sinking and are still trying to figure out exactly what caused the accident.
