A 19-year-old man survived a harrowing 400-foot fall from a bridge in Washington State during the Memorial Day weekend, according to a report in the New York Post. The incident occurred on Saturday while the young man was attempting to walk underneath the High Steel Bridge, one of the tallest railroad bridges in the United States.
The High Steel Bridge, constructed in 1929 by the Simpson Logging Company and later converted into a road in the late 1950s, is an iconic structure. It spans the south fork of the Skokomish River in Mason County, stretching 685 feet long and towering 365 feet above the river.
West Mason Fire Chief Matthew Welander explained that the man was navigating a washout that has mistakenly been used as a trail by many. "He was walking down a washout that a lot of people use, and has kind of become a trail. It's not a trail," said Welander. He emphasized the perilous nature of the terrain, noting that it is too steep and deceptive. The young man ultimately slid all the way down to the river.

Despite the dramatic fall, the man sustained only minor injuries. Authorities have not released his identity. The West Mason Fire Department shared images on Facebook showing the rescue operation, where a firefighter used a rope and harness to bring the man back up to safety. "Hooked him up into a harness and brought him all the way back up," Welander reported.
Welander and other authorities reiterated the deceptive nature of the terrain and criticized visitors for not respecting the area's natural dangers. "We get a lot of practice hauling dead bodies out of here. It's probably a 20-to-1 ratio," Welander remarked, highlighting the frequency and severity of incidents in the area. Rescue teams are called to the location approximately three to five times each year.
This incident underscores the importance of respecting nature and adhering to safety guidelines in hazardous areas, as even seemingly manageable paths can pose significant risks.
